Faced with the shortage of electronic components, MicroEJ and Rtone have joined forces to offer manufacturers a software solution that accelerates the development of connected objects.

  • Together MicroEJ and Rtone offer a range of technologies and skills to connected object manufacturers who are looking for a cost-effective and secure solution for their product design.
  • The synergy between the two companies accelerates the development of IoT projects by a factor of two to three. They offer an optimal and simplified porting of software functions in case of a change of electronic components (dual sourcing strategy).
  • Rtone officially becomes the first French “Certified Partner” of MicroEJ in the Design Services category.
  • MicroEJ and Rtone experts will be present at the SIDO at the Cité Internationale in Lyon from 14 to 15 September at stand #E225.

Nantes, September 12th 2022

MicroEJ, a leading provider of standard software containers for embedded and IoT devices, today announced the integration of its standard Virtual Execution Environment, MICROEJ VEE, into Rtone’s technology portfolio.

Rtone, a business unit of the ABMI Group, has been recognized for its expertise in product design and development since 2007. With its team of 80 engineers, Rtone carries out all the design, electronics, radio, mechanics and development of all embedded, mobile and cloud software, as well as maintenance.

This partnership aims to unite MicroEJ’s technology in the form of its optimised software container with Rtone’s skills in electronics, mechatronics, design and software. This synergy allows us to respond to crucial issues related to the world of embedded systems: a development process simplifié et accéléré permettant d’optimiser les coûts et les délais de mise sur le marché.

This collaboration provides a unique solution to strengthen the resilience of the electronic components supply chain. It facilitates the implementation of multi-sourcing strategies that significantly reduce any potential risk to supply capacity. The replacement of a processor is limited to the adaptation of the electronic board and most of the software functions will work in the same way without any modification to the new electronics. The solution saves several months of development time compared to the usual technologies without software containers.

With over 100 million “Powered by MicroEJ” products already sold, MICROEJ VEE is a standard software container, similar to Android, but designed for low-cost and low-power processors. The solution enables:

  • Accelerate development with digital twins:

MicroEJ radically simplifies new product design by integrating simulation for prototyping, development and testing on digital twins. In particular, simulation can accelerate the validation of product specifications without waiting for the availability of the first electronic prototypes.

  • Enhance supply chain resilience:

The MICROEJ VEE software container separates the software layer from the hardware layer and allows for rapid processor changes, without changing the software functions of the product. Manufacturers can quickly react to hardware shortages or obsolescence to ensure business continuity in the face of uncertainty due to widespread supply issues.

  • Capitalise on software assets:

MICROEJ VEE promotes the reuse of software assets developed as components and fosters incremental innovation when designing new products.

“One of MicroEJ’s major objectives is to become part of the industrial value chain by democratising software container technology – already widely used in the computer and smartphone world – to the embedded world”, says Fred Rivard, President of MicroEJ. “This achievement is reinforced by strong partnerships with leading players such as Rtone, who share the same belief in optimising our customers’ costs and budgets while ensuring the design of robust, cost-effective and low-power connected objects.”

“Our collaboration with MicroEJ allows us to increase our ability to meet our customers’ needs by offering a turnkey solution for the software and design of their product”, says Adrien Desportes, Managing Director of Rtone. “Thanks to MICROEJ VEE, we are truly accelerating the design of new connected objects that are scalable and rich in functionality.”

After the launch of several successful projects in home automation and industry. Rtone joins the MicroEJ Certified Partner program. This program will increase the joint sales forces tenfold and offer the industrialists skills specially trained in the use of MicroEJ technologies.

Visit Rtone’s stand at #E225 at the SIDO exhibition which will be held from 14 to 15 September at the Cité Internationale in Lyon. A unique opportunity to discuss with MicroEJ and Rtone experts on the trends and challenges of the world of connected objects, and possible solutions to the global shortage of electronic components.
